Bahamas Bareboats
Bareboating in the Bahamas is the experience of a lifetime. However, all things come with a caveat: the waters are extremely shallow, low draft catamarans are recommended, don’t travel after dark, don’t leave your anchorage too early in the morning, always be on the watch for coral heads and reefs and sand banks. Practice Bahamian style anchoring with two anchors, you’re going to need it.
Best time of year for the Bahamas is definitely the summer: June, July, August and September are the best months. It is possible to bareboat in Winter, but the weather can be cold and quite windy as the continental weather fronts from the US mainland go through the islands on their way out to the Atlantic. Summer weather can almost be guaranteed, winter weather cannot. The Bahamas are NOT located in the tropics, they are, in fact “sub-tropical”, so now you know and no excuses if you freeze in January.
The recognized starting point for most bareboat charters will be Marsh Harbour in the Abacos. If you only have a week, stick to the Sea of Abaco. If you are taking a longer holiday or vacation, say 10 days or two or three weeks, you are free to go further afield and explore the Berry Islands, the Exumas and even the Out Islands.
The snorkeling and SCUBA diving is exceptional, some of the best in the world, comparable to the Cayman Islands and other famous underwater adventure locations.
The Bahamas Islands include some of the most remarkable cruising grounds for both luxury charter yacht and bareboat vacations and holidays in the world. The crystal clear waters and unique reefs, coral heads and the wildlife are unparalleled. The Bahamian people are warm friendly when treated with respect and the whole Bahamian experience gets 5 stars from our perspective. Some of our favorite places include the Exuma Islands and the Abaco and of course, the best for last, the Out-Islands.
There are 700 islands in The Bahamas covering 150,000 square miles of tropical sea with approximately 5,000 square miles of land. Each island in the Bahamas has its own personality and something different to offer. Enjoy a variety filled vacation or holiday by visiting as many islands as time allows. Spend a few fun days in cosmopolitan Nassau with its duty free shops, golf, museums and restaurants. Lie back and relax on the bright white sand of Long Island’s deserted beaches. Experience the dive of a lifetime in challenging wreck sites off the coast of San Salvador. Witness the spectacle of nesting flamingos and other exotic wildlife in Inagua National Park. Cruise through the Exumas’ 100-mile-long string of pristine cays. The hard part is deciding which islands to visit! coral formations with some low rounded hills. It is a beautiful country and a difficult one to administer: ferry services between the islands constitute the main communications and transportation medium for commercial goods and people.
