Grenadines Bareboat Yachts

Grenadines Sailing Vacation

The Grenadines are the next best Caribbean destination for bare-boaters after the BVI. After you’ve done the BVI a couple of times or more, it can become a little tedious and crowded.  So, the Great Leap Forward is to the Grenadines that are located S. of St. Vincent and North of Grenada.

There are two main things you need to know about the Grenadines:

a) If you are a skipper, your skill level should be higher than the minimum  necessary for the BVI. The Grenadines offer more blue-water sailing and generally heavier seas because they are open to the Atlantic swells coming in from the East. There is no protective reef here, so as you move from island to island in the Grenadines, keep your eye on the weather and the height of the rollers.  Winter is not recommended. Spring, summer and fall are nice.

b) They are hard to get to; from the continental United States, the best two ways are either Miami- Grenada or a direct flight into St. Lucia from one of the major hubs.  The small local airlines are somewhat unreliable so if you have an ongoing flight, say to St. Vincent or to Canouan, you’ll just have to play it by ear.
